Chepelare
Chernatitsa Mountain is situated to the west of the municipality. Along the ridge of it run the main thoroughfare connecting the two main Roman roads crossing the Balkans: Singidunum (modern Belgrade) – Constantinople, and Via Egnatia along the Aegean coast. The ancient road, which connected the Upper Thracian Plain and its capital Philipopolis (Plovdiv) with Western Thrace in the area of the town of Drama, was also used in times even before the Roman Empire. Also, at the beginning of the 18th century, the French traveller Paul Lucas went this road, which speaks highly of its durability and significance. Today, it is well-maintained in its original form in several parts, being the most attractive one the 2 km sections near Persenk peak. There is good transport infrastructure to Chernatitsa ridge, both for hiking and for off-road vehicles. Dozens of trails and forest roads, used by locals for centuries, are signposted. The villages of Hvoyna, Orehovo, Zabardo, Zornitsa and the town of Chepelare are used as a starting point for many hiking tours. You can get to any of these places driving on well-paved roads.
